Johnson County was formed on November 16, 1833 from parts of Pope County.
It was named after Benjamin Johnson , an early lawyer in Arkansas. The first schools were private schools that the children could only attend for a fee. In 1843 the first law for a public school system was created, but the necessary funds were not available for this. Thus, the public school system could not be introduced until 1866.
