The county is located in the far west of Arkansas, borders Oklahoma to the west and has an area of 2,326 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

The Scott County was formed on November 5, 1833 from parts of Crawford County, Pope County and Pulaski County. It was named after Andrew Scott (1789-1851), a Supreme Court Justice for the Arkansas Territory and delegate of the State Constitutional Convention of 1836.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census , Scott County had 10,996 people; 4,323 households and 3,121 families were counted. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.53 percent white, 0.23 percent African American, 1.40 percent Native American, 0.95 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.56 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.32 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.71 percent of the population.
Of the 4,323 households, 32.6 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, and 27.8 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent of all households were single households and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.98.
26.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.7 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. Statistically, there were 101.9 males for every 100 females and an average of 96.6 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,412 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,311. Males had a median income of $ 23,118 versus $ 17,127 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,609. 15.3 percent of families and 18.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
