Nevada County was formed on March 20, 1871 from parts of Columbia County, Hempstead County, and Ouachita County. It was named after the state of Nevada of the same name .

According to the 2010 census , Nevada County had 8,997 people in 4,595 households. The population density was 5.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.
