The county is located in northeast Arkansas and is about 50 km to the east from the Mississippi River , which forms the border with Tennessee . Cross County covers an area of 1,612 square kilometers, including 17 square kilometers of water. The Saint Francis River flows through the county in north-south direction . The Cross County was formed on November 15, 1862 from parts of Crittenden County, Poinsett County and St. Francis County. It was named after David Cross , a colonel in the Confederate Army .
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Cross County had 17,870 people in 6,638 households. The population density was 11.2 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.69 people each in the 6,638 households.
The racial the population was composed of 75.4 percent white, 22.6 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.9 percent were 65 years or older. 51.7 percent of the population was female.
