Polk County was formed on November 30, 1844 from parts of Sevier County. It was named after James K. Polk (1795–1849), the eleventh President of the USA (1845–1849).

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census , Polk County had 20,229 people; 8,047 households and 5,793 families were counted. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.69 percent white, 0.16 percent African American, 1.49 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.72 percent from other ethnic groups Groups.
