The Izard County was formed on October 27, 1825 from parts of Independence County as the 13th County. It is named after George Izard (1776-1828), the second governor of Arkansas  -  territory (1825-1828).

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census , Izard County had 13,696 people in 5,715 households. The population density was 9.1 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 95.8 percent white, 1.3 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Statistically, 2.17 people lived in each of the 5,715 households.

20.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.6 percent were 65 years or older. 48.7 percent of the population was female.
