The Phillips County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Arkansas . In 2010 , the county had 21,757 residents and a population density of 12.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is the city of Helena-West Helena , which was merged in 2006 from Helena and West Helena .
geography
The county is located in east Arkansas between the White River in the west and the Mississippi River , which forms the border with Mississippi in the east . In the far northeast of the county is the confluence of the Saint Francis River in the Mississippi. The Phillips County and has an area of 1884 square kilometers, of which 90 square kilometers are water surface. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history
Phillips County was formed on May 1, 1920 from parts of Arkansas County and Hempstead County. It was named after Sylvanus Phillips , the first white settler known by name in the area and a member of the territorial government. On July 4, 1863, the Battle of Helena between the Northern and Southern states took place here during the Civil War .

The racial the population was composed of 35.6 percent white, 62.7 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
27.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 56.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.3 percent were 65 years or older. 53.1 percent of the population was female.
