The Johnson County is a county in the northwest of the US state of Arkansas . The county seat is Clarksville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located on the north bank of the Arkansas River in northwestern Arkansas and has an area of 1,768 square kilometers, of which 53 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Johnson County was formed on November 16, 1833 from parts of Pope County.

It was named after Benjamin Johnson , an early lawyer in Arkansas. The first schools were private schools that the children could only attend for a fee. In 1843 the first law for a public school system was created, but the necessary funds were not available for this. Thus, the public school system could not be introduced until 1866. The first school for deaf children was established in Clarksville in 1851.

Johnson County has a history of slavery that began with the arrival of the first white settlers and didn't end until the end of the Civil War . However, the population of slaves was rather small compared to other parts of the state. In 1860 there were 7,612 people in the county, of whom 973 were African American.

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census , Johnson County had 25,540 people in 8,911 households. The population density was 14.9 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 87.2 percent white, 1.4 percent African American, 0.9 percent Native American, 0.7 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 12.1 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Statistically, there were 2.69 people each in the 8,911 households.

25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older. 50.4 percent of the population was female.
