Lawrence County was formed on January 15, 1815 from the now defunct Madrid County in Missouri. It was named after Captain James Lawrence (1781–1813), who became famous with the saying: “Don't give up the ship” in the British-American War of 1812 after he had already been fatally wounded.

The earliest important settlement was Davidsonville on the banks of the Black River , which was named after the MP John Davidson . The city served as the county's first administrative center in 1816. The city grew to over 3,000 residents before yellow fever ended further settlement. In 1829 the city ceased to exist.

Another important settlement was Smithville, near the western county line. The city was named after the businessman Robert Smith. From 1837 it served as a county seat. After the Iron Mountain Railroad was completed, Walnut Ridge became the county seat in 1870 .
