The county is located in northeastern Arkansas and has an area of 1,539 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Woodruff County was formed on November 26, 1862 from parts of Jackson County and St. Francis County. It was named after William E. Woodruff (1795–1885), the founder and editor of the Arkansas Gazette .

As of the 2000 census , Woodruff County had 8,741 people. 142 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,531 households and 2,439 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.86 percent white, 30.75 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.81 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.79 percent of the population.
Of the 3,531 households, 30.9 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 48.6 percent were married couples living together, 16.7 percent were single mothers, and 30.9 percent were non-families. 28.2 percent of all households were single households and 14.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97.
26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.7 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there was an average of 84.9 males.
The median income for a household in the 22,099 USD , and the median income for a family 27,824 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,051 versus $ 17,995 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,269. 21.7 percent of families and 27.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
