Union County had a population of 45,629 people as of the 2000 census . 983 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,989 households and 12,646 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.15 percent white, 31.97 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent are descended from two or more races.
