The county is located in the extreme south of Arkansas, borders Louisiana and has an area of 2,733 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

Union County had a population of 45,629 people as of the 2000 census . 983 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,989 households and 12,646 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.15 percent white, 31.97 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.14 percent of the population.
Of the 17,989 households, 32.2 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.3 percent were married couples living together, 15.2 percent were single mothers, 29.7 percent were non-families. 26.9 percent of all households were single households and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
25.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were an average of 86.0 males.
The median income for a household in the 29,809 USD , and the median income for a family 36,805 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,868 versus $ 19,740 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,063. 14.7 percent of families and 18.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
