The Calhoun County is a county in the US state of Arkansas . The county seat is Hampton , named after John R. Hampton , a US Senator who was instrumental in the formation of the county.

The county is located in southern Arkansas on the northeast bank of the Ouachita River , is approximately 50 km from Louisiana in the south and has an area of ​​1,638 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Calhoun County Age Pyramid

Calhoun County was formed on December 6, 1850 from parts of Dallas County, Quachita County and Bradley County. It was named after John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), an American politician and vice-president.

Demographic data

As of the 2000 census , Calhoun County had 5,744 people. 117 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,317 households and 1,628 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.51 percent white, 23.38 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.92 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.94 percent are descended from two or more races.
