The Calhoun County is a county in the US state of Arkansas . The county seat is Hampton , named after John R. Hampton , a US Senator who was instrumental in the formation of the county.

The county is located in southern Arkansas on the northeast bank of the Ouachita River , is approximately 50 km from Louisiana in the south and has an area of 1,638 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

Calhoun County was formed on December 6, 1850 from parts of Dallas County, Quachita County and Bradley County. It was named after John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), an American politician and vice-president.
Demographic data
As of the 2000 census , Calhoun County had 5,744 people. 117 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,317 households and 1,628 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.51 percent white, 23.38 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian and 0.92 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.94 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race 1.50 percent of the population was regardless of ethnicity.
Of the 2,317 households, 31.2 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.3 percent were single mothers, 29.7 percent were non-families. 27.3 percent of all households were single households and 12.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.94.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.7 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there was an average of 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the 28,438 USD , and the median income for a family 34,647 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,353 versus $ 17,452 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,555. 13.2 percent of families and 16.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
