Clark County was formed on December 15, 1818 from parts of Arkansas County. It was named after William Clark (1770-1838), a governor of Missouri  -  the territory of the Member and Lewis and Clark Expedition .

The county's borders were revised five times until they have been consolidated in their current form since 1877.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census , Clark County had 23,546 people in 8,912 households and 5,819 families. The population density was ten inhabitants per square kilometer.
