The Missouri Territory was a historic territory of the United States that existed between 1812 and 1821. It was originally created as Louisiana Territory and was renamed on June 4, 1812 to avoid confusion with the new state of Louisiana .

The Arkansas Territory was separated from the Missouri Territory on July 4, 1819. This extended south of a point on the Mississippi River at 36 ° N latitude west to the Saint Francis River . Following from there, it ran the 36 ° 30 'N latitude westward to the territorial border.

At that time people tried to be recognized as an independent and independent state in the Union.

It was not until August 10, 1821, that the current state of Missouri and its current borders were separated from the rest of the territory and became the 24th state in the Union.

The remaining portion, consisting of the current states of Iowa , South Dakota , North Dakota, and part of Minnesota , became practically a disordered territory when Missouri became a state. In 1834 the part of the area east of the Missouri River was annexed to the Michigan Territory .
