Pike County was formed on November 1, 1833 from parts of Clark County and Hempstead County. It was named after Zebulon Pike (1779-1813), an American officer and explorer, after whom the mountain Pikes Peak in Colorado was named.

According to the 2010 census , Pike County's population was 11,291 in 4,345 households. The population density was 7.2 people per square kilometer.
