The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Arkansas and has an area of 2,457 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Yell County was formed on December 5, 1840 from parts of Pope County and Scott County. It was named after Archibald Yell (1797-1847), the second governor of Arkansas (1840-1844).

As of the 2000 census , Yell County had 21,139 people in 7,922 households and 5,814 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.63 percent white, 1.47 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 0.69 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.99 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.62 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 12.73 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,922 households, 33.6 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.1 percent were single mothers, and 26.6 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent of all households were single households and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.04.
25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there was an average of 96.3 males.
The median income for a household in the 28,916 USD , and the median income for a family 33,409 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,172 versus $ 18,148 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,383. 11.7 percent of families and 15.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
