The Madison County is a county in the US state of Arkansas . The county seat is Huntsville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Madison County is part of the Fayetteville – Springdale – Rogers metropolitan area in Arkansas and Missouri .

The county is located almost in the far northwest of Arkansas, about 35 km to the north from Missouri, about 60 km to the west from Oklahoma , and covers an area of ​​2,168 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It borders on the following counties:

Madison County was formed on September 30, 1836 from parts of Washington County. It was named after James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President of the USA (1809-1817).

Long before the first European emigrants came to this area in 1826, it was settled by various Indian peoples and their subgroups along the rivers and streams.

The first court hearings were held in private homes until the completion of the first courthouse in 1839.

The courthouse was destroyed by the military during the American Civil War. The building, rebuilt after the war in 1871, was completely destroyed by fire on December 1, 1879, and the building that still exists today was completed in October 1882.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Madison County had 15,717 people in 5,440 households. The population density was 7.3 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 93.6 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 1.2 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 4.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Statistically, 2.81 people lived in each of the 5,440 households.

23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.8 percent were 65 years or older. 50.0 percent of the population was female.
