Madison County was formed on September 30, 1836 from parts of Washington County. It was named after James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President of the USA (1809-1817).
Long before the first European emigrants came to this area in 1826, it was settled by various Indian peoples and their subgroups along the rivers and streams.
The first court hearings were held in private homes until the completion of the first courthouse in 1839.
The courthouse was destroyed by the military during the American Civil War. The building, rebuilt after the war in 1871, was completely destroyed by fire on December 1, 1879, and the building that still exists today was completed in October 1882.
