history

George Washington

Washington County was formed on October 17, 1828 from parts of Crawford County. It was named after President George Washington . The district capital was also called Washington at first, but after there was also a parish called Washington in Hempstead County, the city was renamed Fayetteville. The Battle of Cane Hill took place here on November 28, 1862, and the Battle of Prairie Grove between Union forces and the Confederates on December 7 of the same year .

Washington County had a population of 157,715 people as of the 2000 census .
