The county is located in north-central Arkansas and has an area of 1,578 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Stone County was formed on April 17, 1873 from parts of Independence County, Izard County, Searcy County and Van Buren County. It was named after the significant rock formations in the area.

Stone County's population was 11,499 as of the 2000 census . 141 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,768 households and 3,461 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.27 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.77 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.64 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.08 percent of the population.
Of the 4,768 households, 26.9 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 62.3 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent of all households were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
22.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44, 28.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.9 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there was an average of 95.3 males.
The median income for a household in the 22,209 USD , and the median income for a family 28,009 USD. Males had a median income of $ 20,904 versus $ 16,118 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,134. 14.1 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
