history
Pulaski County was formed from parts of Arkansas County on December 15, 1818, and is one of five counties that were formed at a time when Arkansas was still part of the Missouri Territory. It was named after the Polish soldier Kazimierz Pułaski , who saved George Washington 's life during the Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Pulaski County's population was 361,474. 8,253 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 147,942 households and 95,718 families. The population density was 181 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 63.96 percent white, 31.87 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 1.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.40 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.44 percent of the population.
Of the 147,942 households, 30.5 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 45.9 percent were married couples living together, 15.1 percent were single mothers, and 35.3 percent were non-families. 30.0 percent of all households were single households and 8.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.98.
25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.5 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.0 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there was an average of 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the 38,120 USD , and the median income for a family 46,523 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,131 versus $ 25,943 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,466. 10.4 percent of families and 13.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
