Kazimierz Pułaski
Kazimierz Michał Wacław Wiktor Pułaski , in the United States also Casimir Pulaski (born March 6, 1745 in Warsaw , Poland , † October 11, 1779 in Savannah , Georgia ) was a Polish landed gentleman , one of the leaders of the Confederation of Bar and a general of Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War .
Pułaski is considered the founder of the American cavalry (" Father of the American Cavalry ") and defeated the British at Charleston in South Carolina on May 10, 1779 at the head of his cavalry region . He died of a series of injuries sustained during the siege of Savannah, Georgia.
Honors
Several cities and districts in the United States were named after Pułaski , including Pulaski in Oswego County or Pulaski in Tennessee . Also a steamer, the USS Pulaski , and a submarine of the US Navy, the USS Casimir Pulaski , as well as the Fort Pulaski in the Civil War . There is also the General Pulaski Skyway , a high bridge in New Jersey , and a Pulaski memorial in Freedom Plaza in Washington .
The residential quarters of the US Army in Kaiserslautern are called Pulaski Barracks .
In the cities of Chicago and New York there is an annual Casimir Pulaski Day parade. Pułaski was posthumously awarded honorary citizenship of the United States in 2009 as the penultimate of eight people to date .
gender
After an exhumation in the 1990s, Pułaski's skeleton was identified as having “clearly female characteristics”, but due to the lack of evidence of DNA, it was declared a scientific opinion. On April 4, 2019, recent results of a DNA test using modern technology were published, according to which such characteristics are present. Publication in scientific journals is still pending.
Contemporary witnesses and perhaps even Pułaski himself may not have been aware of this fact, since he was brought up as a man. This could be an indication of undetected intersexuality , namely the presence of male and female sexual characteristics.
