St. Francis County was formed on October 13, 1827 from parts of Phillips County. It was named after the St. Francis River that flows through the county.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , St. Francis County had 18,258 people in 9086 households. The population density was 11.1 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.69 people in each of the 9086 households.

The racial the population was composed of 45.3 percent white, 52.1 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.3 percent of the population.
