history
Columbia County was formed on December 17, 1852 from parts of Hempstead County, Lafayette County, and Quachita County. It was named after Columbia , the poetic name for the United States in the 20th century.
The first tax surveys in 1854 found that Columbia County had 1,675 slaves out of a total population of around 6,000. In 1860, the county's first census recorded 12,449 people. 3599 of them were slaves.
The relative isolation and the lack of transport routes made cross-regional trade extremely difficult. Columbia County was the only county in Arkansas that had no access to navigable rivers. This condition only changed with the connection to the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railroad . In 1882 the first cotton was shipped by railroad car.
