The Claiborne Parish ( French : Paroisse de Claiborne ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 17,195 inhabitants and a population density of 8.8 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Homer , named after the Greek poet Homer .

The Parish is located in northern Louisiana, bordering Arkansas , about 100 km to the west from Texas and has an area of ​​1988 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

history

The Claiborne Parish was formed in 1828 from parts of the Natchitoches Parish. It was named after William CC Claiborne , the first governor of Louisiana.

According to the 2000 census , Claiborne Parish had 16,851 people in 6,270 households and 4,338 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 51.80 percent white, 47.37 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races.
