The Jefferson Parish ( French : Paroisse de Jefferson ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 432,552 residents and a population density of 574 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Gretna .

The Parish is located almost in the extreme southeast of Louisiana, borders the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of ​​1664 square kilometers, of which 870 square kilometers are water surface. It borders on the following parishes:

history

Jefferson Parish was formed in 1825 from parts of Orleans Parish. It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third president of the USA. Jefferson Parish is known in the USA from the television series Steven Seagal: Lawman . This American reality TV series, which aired on A&E Network between 2009 and 2010 , describes the work of Hollywood star Steven Seagals , the Reserve Deputy Chief Sheriff in Jefferson Parish.

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson Parish had 455,466 people in 176,234 households and 120,191 families. The population density was 574 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.82 percent white, 22.86 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 3.09 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.72 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 88.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,435 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,834. Males had a median income of $ 35,081 versus $ 24,921 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,953. 10.8 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
