Kenner (originally French: Cannes Brûlées ) is a town in Jefferson Parish in the US -amerikanischen State Louisiana and a suburb of New Orleans . The city had 66,975 inhabitants in 2013.
history
In 1855 Minor Kenner founded the city on the area of three plantations that his family had acquired. At that time there was only marshland north of what is now the airline highway .
From 1915 to 1931 a streetcar connected New Orleans with connoisseurs. The city began to grow rapidly when the swampland was drained and replenished in the late 1950s. By 1960 the population had grown to 17,037. During the 1960s, the city developed, helped by the construction of Interstate 10 and the expansion of the Veterans Memorial Highway to the suburb of New Orleans. By 1979 the city had become the sixth largest in the state. In 1982 Pan-Am Flight 759 crashed into a residential area. 154 people were killed in the accident.
Since 1944, connoisseurs have been home to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport , the New Orleans airport.
geography
Kenner covers an area of 39.4 km², of which 0.3 km² extends over water. The city is located in the western part of the metropolitan area around New Orleans and is bordered to the north by Lake Pontchartrain and to the south by the Mississippi River . It is bordered by River Ridge and Metairie to the east and St. Charles Parish to the west .
Interstate 10 runs parallel to it , along with US Highway 61 , which runs along the entire Mississippi.
Culture and sights
The Rivertown Repertory Theater , the Kenner's Heritage Park , the Kenner's planetarium & science museum as well as many shops and restaurants can be found in the historic district of Rivertown along the former Kenners main street .
Kenner is home to the Pontchartrain Center, the second largest conference center in the New Orleans metropolitan region, and one of the largest hospitals, the Ochsner Medical Center . With the Treasure Chest Casino , the city houses the only casino in the eastern part of the Parish .
education
Kenner owns a high school , several elementary schools , a middle school and various private schools. Many students attend schools in the area.
