Lloyd Price (* 9. March 1933 in Kenner , Louisiana , † 6. May 2021 in New Rochelle , New York ) was an American R & B - and rock 'n' roll - singer , who especially in the 1950s and early 1960s Years of success.

Career

Price grew up in Kenner, a suburb of New Orleans , where he became familiar with the music of Louis Jordan , Amos Milburn , Jimmy and Joe Liggins and Roy Milton at an early age through the jukebox in his mother's fish shop . Together with his little brother Leo , Price put together a band in the early 1950s that played mainly in the Kenners area. It was during such a performance that Dave Bartholomew became aware of the young singer. As a result, Price got a recording deal with Specialty Records in 1952 . His composition Lawdy Miss Clawdy soared to the top of the R&B charts and is now considered a classic. The hits Ooh, Ooh, Ooh , Restless Heart , Tell Me Pretty Baby and Ain't It a Shame followed , then Price had to join the military and was sent to Korea .

After his return he founded his own label called KRC Records with Harold Logan and Bill Boskent . Through the ballad Just Because , first published on KRC, ABC-Paramount became aware of Price and he got a record deal there in 1957. Stagger Lee , his version of the folk song Stack-a-Lee , made it to the top of both the R&B and pop charts in 1958 . 1959 followed the hits Where Were You (On Our Wedding Day)? , Personality , I'm Gonna Get Married and Come into My Heart . In 1960 Price had success with Lady Luck and Question .

In 1962, Price said goodbye to ABC-Paramount and founded Double L Records with Logan, where Wilson Pickett made his first recordings. They later ran another label, Turntable Records. But after Logan was murdered in 1969, Price initially withdrew completely from the music scene. He moved to Africa and financially supported Muhammad Ali in two boxing matches. Price returned to America in the early 1980s, but continued to not perform publicly until he went on a 1993 European tour with Jerry Lee Lewis , Little Richard and Gary US Bonds .

In 1998 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
