John Patton

Big John Patton (* 12. July 1935 in Kansas City , † 19th March 2002 in Montclair , New Jersey ) was an American hard bop - and soul-jazz - organist .

Live and act

John Patton began his career as a pianist in the Lloyd Price orchestra in the 1950s , then switched to the organ. In the 1960s he recorded a number of albums for the Blue Note label , collaborating with Lou Donaldson and Grant Green .

His soul jazz also processed elements of modal and free jazz , but never left the roots of this genre. Patton wrote classic titles like "Funky Mama" and "Along Came John". In the late 1960s he recorded albums for the Blue Note label with artists such as Harold Alexander and George Coleman , including Understanding and Accent on the Blues . He was also involved in the recording of Blue Note albums by his colleagues George Braith , Don Wilkerson , Art Blakey and Clifford Jordan and Lou Donaldson . Patton formed a trio with guitarist Grant Green and drummer Ben Dixon .

He continued his recording activity until the late 1990s; In the mid-1980s he was still working on John Zorn's concept albums The Big Gundown and Spillane .
