Ed Cherry
Edward Earl Cherry (also Ed Cherry ) (* 12. October 1954 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American guitarist of modern jazz .

Cherry, who has been playing guitar since he was twelve and influenced by Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix as well as Grant Green , was initially active in rhythm & blues and funk bands before studying at Berklee College of Music in 1972 and 1973 . In 1974 he moved to New York City and was part of Jimmy McGriff's band until 1975 . From 1978 to 1983, and then again from 1986, he was a guitarist in Dizzy Gillespie's groups , with whom he toured worldwide and recorded albums such as the Grammy- winning Live at the Royal Festival Hall . Between 1983 and 1986 he was a member of Sam Rivers' band . He also worked with musicians as diverse as Carmen McRae , Kenny Burrell , Tim Hardin , Steve Coleman , Bill Cosby , Freddie Hubbard and Henry Threadgill , in whose "Very, Very Circus" he played for a long time. Since Gillespie's death he has been touring with his own trio, but has also recorded several albums with John Patton . In 1997 and 1998 he also played in Roy Hargroves "Crisol", since 2004 with singer Paula West. Occasionally he appears in an ensemble with three other guitarists.
Cherry was a professor at Essex County College in Newark and at Montclair State University .
