Henry Threadgill
Henry Threadgill (born February 15, 1944 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz musician (saxophone, flute, composition).
Life
Threadgill studied at the American College of Music of the Governor's State University . He worked with gospel shows and blues bands . Since 1962 he was a member of the Experimental Band of Muhal Richard Abrams and joined the circle around the later Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Together with Fred Hopkins and Steve McCall , he founded the group Air , with which he participated in the Wildflowers Loft Sessions in 1976. In the band then Pheeroan akLaff and Andrew Cyrille played as drummers. In the mid-1980s, the band was briefly expanded with Threadgills then life partner Cassandra Wilson . Later he often worked with unusual line-ups, for example with four bassists in X-75 or with his Very Very Circus (with tubas, trombones and two guitarists).
Threadgill has a great interest in musical structures and is also dedicated to early jazz forms. He has also worked with David Murray , Bill Laswell , Anthony Braxton , Roscoe Mitchell , Joseph Jarman, and other modern creative musicians .
He was married to dancer Christina Jones, a founding member of the Urban Bush Woman Dance Company. Their daughter with Jones, Pyeng Threadgill, is also a musician. Threadgill lives in New York's Lower East Side with his long-time partner, the Nagamese singer and musicologist Senti Toy. In 2016 he received the Pulitzer Prize for the album In for a Penny, In for a Pound ( Pi Recordings ) .
