Leonard Jones (bassist)

Leonard E. Jones (* 6. December 1943 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz - bassist .

Life

Jones grew up in west Chicago, where he was musically influenced from an early age. His family lived above the Vi's Lounge nightclub , where blues musicians like Muddy Waters , Howlin 'Wolf and Bo Diddley performed. While doing military service in West Germany, he acquired his first double bass and learned the basics of bass playing. After his discharge from the army in 1963 he returned to Chicago and took private bass lessons with Rudolph Fahsbender, bassist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , with whom he later continued his studies at the Chicago Conservatory of Music .

During this time he also met Muhal Richard Abrams , with whom he studied music theory and in whose experimental band he played. In 1965 he joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). Until 1969 he lived again in Germany, where he worked as a musician and studied photography from 1970 to 1972 at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . In the summer of 1974 he first returned to Chicago; In 1977 he came to New York City as a member of the Muhal Richard Abrams Group , where he lived until his return to Germany in 1980. In the 1980s and 90s he played a. a. with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Hank Crawford / David Fathead Newman , Dave Burrell , Lou Blackburn , Mal Waldron and Sonny Simmons .

In addition to experimental music and improvisation, Jones has also been involved in rhythm & blues and gospel music (with Gene Conners ' The American Gospel Caravan ) and theater productions since the 1990s . a. at the New York Public Theater and the Oberhausen Theater . Between 1967 and 2009 Jones took part in 19 recording sessions, including a. with Oliver Lake , Henry Threadgill , Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre , Mal Waldron , Günther Klatt , Lajos Dudas and the International Composers & Improvisers Ensemble around George Lewis . In 2011 he released the solo album Dialogues (JazzSick Records). Today Leonard Jones lives in Ratingen near Düsseldorf.
