Lajos Dudas [ lɒjoʃ dudɒʃ ] (* 18th February 1941 in Budapest , Hungary ) is a German-Hungarian Jazz - clarinetist and composer .

Life

Dudas received his education from 1958 to 1963 at the Béla Bartók Conservatory and at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in his hometown. Budapest. After a time as a freelance musician from 1963 to 1973, Dudas chose to live in Neuss on the left bank of the Rhine in the early 1970s , where, in addition to his work as a performing artist, he also worked as a clarinet and saxophone teacher at the local music school until 2004 . From 1975 to 1985 he was also a lecturer at the Rhineland Pedagogical University in Neuss. Dudas presented himself not only as a jazz or pop musician, but also as a soloist with works such as Carl Maria von Weber's clarinet quintet, Stravinsky's solo pieces for clarinet or Alexander Glasunov's concerto for alto saxophone (with the Neuss Chamber Orchestra).

After a free tonal phase in the 1980s, from which albums such as Detour , Monte Carlo (with Attila Zoller ), CL4 / Alte and Neue Wege (with Theo Jörgensmann ) and Mistral emerged, Dudas devoted himself more and more to so-called melodic jazz, without but to deny its distinctive style. For over twenty years he has been working intensively with the Düsseldorf guitarist Philipp van Endert , with whom he has made numerous duo appearances. Dudas can rarely be seen live in larger ensembles, most recently with his quartet - consisting of Philipp van Endert (guitar), Martin Gjakonovski / Leonard Jones (bass) and Kurt Billker (drums) - on the occasion of a motto concert ( bridging ) with the German Chamber Academy in the Neuss Armory, or at the Salzburg Jazz Autumn with two percussionists (Kurt Billker and Jochen Büttner).

In the course of his career, Dudas has recorded more than 60 singles, LPs and CDs and has participated in numerous radio and TV productions with well-known jazz musicians such as Tom van der Geld , Karl Berger , Albert Mangelsdorff , Gerd Dudek , Vitold Rek , Tommy Vig and Howard Johnson worked.

In 1982 the jury of the 11th International Jazz Composition Competition in Monaco awarded him 1st prize for his composition Urban Blues . In the 1980s, for example, it took top positions in the 'Top People Poll', the renowned international jazz forum, year after year. In 1992, the recording of his Concertino for clarinet and orchestra with the Cologne Radio Orchestra was on the program. Dudas initiated the Neuss concert series Jazz in the Old Council Hall in 1996. Numerous musicians such as Joachim Kühn , Aki Takase , Wolfgang Lackerschmid , Markus Stockhausen , Ali Haurand , Gerd Dudek , Nils Wogram , Jiří Stivín , Barbara Dennerlein and Christoph Spendel performed there until 2006.

Since the end of his teaching activity in Neuss, Dudas has lived in Überlingen on Lake Constance. The city of Neuss honored him in 2018 with a 21-minute short film in the series "Neuss Artists in Portrait" published by the city's cultural office.
