Gerd Dudek (born September 28, 1938 in Groß Döbbern near Breslau , in today's Poland) is a German jazz saxophonist and flutist.

Live and act

After studying music, Dudek first played with Helmut Brandt and in the Kurt Edelhagen Band on the tenor saxophone and clarinet from 1960 to 1964 , then with Joe Nay , before joining the Manfred Schoof Quintet (with Alexander von Schlippenbach , Buschi Niebergall and Jaki Liebezeit ) - at that time one of the most influential European groups in the development of free jazz, which also recorded compositions by Bernd Alois Zimmermann . He has been a member of the Globe Unity Orchestra since it was founded in 1966 . In 1968 he went on a South American tour as a member of the German All Stars and worked with George Russell and Don Cherry . In 1971 he became a member of the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet (Asia tour). He then played in a quartet with Alan Skidmore and Adelhard Roidinger and was one of the co-founders of the European Jazz Quintet with Ali Haurand , with whom he also appeared in other groups (e.g. with Rob van den Broeck and Tony Oxley ).

Dudek also plays the soprano saxophone and is a typical example of the Modern Creative style. He has integrated elements from different styles into his personal musical language. He is considered to be a tasteful, stylish, yet stylistically open wind player with a high ability to work in an ensemble. This led to records and CD recordings with Lester Bowie , Joachim Kühn , Dexter Gordon , Vitold Rek and Peter Giger . Dudek also worked as a guest soloist with the NDR and WDR Big Band, leads his own groups and is a member of the Stefan Heidtmann Project .
