Rob van den Broeck
Robert "Rob" van den Broeck (* 1. December 1940 in Hilversum , † 30 April 2012 in Enter , Overijssel ) was a Dutch pianist of modern jazz and painter .
Life
Van den Broeck had piano lessons as a child. From 1957 to 1962 he studied graphics at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and a little later at the Conservatory in Hilversum. From 1961 he was part of Dick Vennik's group; then he formed a trio with Henny Vonk and Tony Vos. Since the mid-1960s he has accompanied musicians such as Ben Webster , Dexter Gordon and Louis Hayes on their tours through the Dutch jazz clubs and was involved in recordings by Joe Farrell , Clint Houston , Wilton Gaynair and Billy Higgins . Then he became a member of Chris Hinze's band , with whom he recorded several albums. From 1975 to 1977 he was a pianist at the Nederlands Dans Theater . At the same time he began a long-term collaboration in the group “Third Eye” with the Lower Rhine bassist Ali Haurand , who brought him into his “European Jazz Ensemble” in 1981, but also in combo formations with Gerd Dudek , Tony Oxley and Tony Levin . His own quartet Free Fair has existed for almost as long , which he occasionally expanded with brass from the Metropole Orkest .
With the bassist Wiro Mahieu van den Broeck recorded the duo album "Departures" (1996), which was awarded the Wessel-Ilcken Prize . He has also toured with Masha Bijlsma and with a project by Paul van Kemenade and Eric Vloeimans and has worked on recordings by Alan Skidmore , Kenny Wheeler and Yvon Walter. He has appeared in the piano quartet Traveling Light with Albert van Veenendaal, Cor Fuhler and Sylvie Courvoisier .
From 1980 to 2000 van den Broek taught piano as a major at the University of the Arts in Arnhem . He also emerged as a painter through several exhibitions.
Rob van den Broeck died on April 30, 2012 at the age of 71.
