Paul van Kemenade (born May 17, 1957 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch saxophonist and band leader of modern creative jazz .

Live and act

Paul van Kemenade started playing the saxophone at the age of 13. He studied at the Conservatory of Tilburg , where he also played with his own group and began to compose . In 1982 he founded the "Paul Kemenade kwintet", with which he made his first record in 1984, "Call". In addition to his quintet, he also plays a lot as a sideman (with Alexander von Schlippenbach , Aki Takase , Pierre Courbois , Misha Mengelberg , Willem Breuker , Sean Bergin or Louis Moholo ), as well as in projects with musicians and artists outside of jazz. He is the founder and director of the annual festival "Stranger than Paranoia" in Tilburg. Kemenade was a founding member of the Contraband .

With his quintet he usually plays his own compositions and improvises with a wide variety of influences from jazz, classical music, pop, Spanish music to South and West African music. You have also played with symphony orchestras (such as the Brabants Orchestra) and brass bands ("harmony orchestra"). From 1998 they played regularly with South African musicians such as Feya Faku , Louis Mhlanga , tenor saxophonists Sidney Mnisi , Sonti Mndebele and Bheki Khoza , and from 2002 with the Guissé brothers (“Les Frères Guisseé”) from Senegal (album “Fouta” 2003). In addition, his quintet a. a. with Philip Catherine , David Murray , Kenny Wheeler , Zim Ngqawana , the Belgian singer David Linx and Gerd Dudek . In addition to Europe, they toured in Indonesia and South and West Africa (Senegal). Members of the quintet in 2007, along with Kemenade, were Pieter Bast (drums), Rein Godefroy (piano), Louk Boudesteijn (trombone) and Wiro Mahieu (bass). In the Podium Trio he plays with Jan Kuiper and Wolter Wierbos . He also appeared with Wolter Wierbos together with the quartet of Eckard Koltermann , for example at the Jazzfest Berlin 2010. In 2018 he toured with Mariá Portugal .

Awards

In 1984 he received the Podium Prijs from the Dutch Jazz Foundation. In 2000 he was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize .
