Louis Moholo
Louis Moholo Tebugo (* 10. March 1940 in Cape Town ; and Louis Moholo-Moholo ) is a South African jazz - drummer .
Life
Moholo first played with Early Mabuza , the Chordettes in the late 1950s and then with Ronnie Beers The Swinging City Six until 1963 . With the Jazz Ambassadors around Cups Nkanuka , he performed at the Cold Castle National Jazz Festival in 1962 . As a member of The Blue Notes , founded by pianist Chris McGregor , he emigrated to Europe with this band on the occasion of the Antibes Jazz Festival in 1964. After a stay in Zurich , the musicians settled in London . Together with Johnny Dyani , Mongezi Feza , Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor, he inspired the English jazz scene. He was a member of McGregor's influential free jazz big band Brotherhood of Breath and Dudu Pukwana's group Spear .
Moholo went back to South Africa for a short time in 1971 and put together the first edition of his Spirits Rejoice there . He later founded the group Viva-La-Black and later The Dedication Orchestra , which continued the traditions of the Brotherhood of Breath . His first album under his own name was Spirits Rejoice ( Ogun Records , 1978), which is considered a classic example of a successful collaboration between British and South African jazz soloists and, in addition to compositions by himself and other band members, also Todd Matshikiza's Wedding Hymn (from the musical King Kong ) and Contains Fezas You Ain't Gonna Know Me 'Cos You Think You Know Me . In the early 1970s he was also a member of the afro rock band Assagai .
Moholo has played with many musicians from the field of free jazz and improvised music, first with Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd , then for many years in the trio of Mike Osborne and with Irène Schweizer and Rüdiger Carl , then with Peter Brötzmann and Harry Miller . Again and again he played alongside Evan Parker , Derek Bailey , Keith Tippett , Elton Dean , but also with Misha Mengelberg , Tristan Honsinger , Curtis Clarke, Sean Bergin as well as with John Tchicai and at the Kirchentag in Frankfurt am Main with the Merseburg cathedral organist Hans- Günther Wauer . The collaboration with Cecil Taylor , which is also recorded on CD , has not continued.
In recent years he has often appeared under the name Louis Moholo-Moholo ( Sesotho moholo = big, old; moholo-moholo = very big, very old). In September 2005 Moholo returned to South Africa from exile and lives again in Cape Town, where he has now built his own big band ( Hear our Heart's Vibrations ).
