Mongezi Feza

Mongezi Feza (* 1945 in Queenstown , South Africa ; † December 14, 1975 in London ) was a South African jazz musician ( trumpeter , composer ).

Live and act

Feza received his first trumpet at the age of eight. In 1962 he joined Chris McGregor and the Blue Notes , which were honored as the best group at a South African jazz festival in 1963, but had little opportunity to perform together due to the apartheid laws . In 1964 he emigrated to Europe with the Blue Notes and initially played in France and Switzerland before moving to Great Britain. Feza continued his work with the sextet of Chris McGregor and also became a member of his Brotherhood of Breath . He also played in the groups of Dudu Pukwana , Spear and Assagai. In 1972 he worked in Scandinavia with bassist Johnny Dyani and Turkish drummer Okay Temiz . He has also recorded with Centipede , Henry Cow , Robert Wyatt and saxophonist Gary Windo .

Feza was a dynamic trumpeter and created his own synthesis of hard bop , free jazz and rock jazz . His compositions Sonia and You Ain't Gonna Know Me ('Cause You Think You Know Me) are still part of the repertoire of musicians friends.
