Okay Temiz (* 11. February 1939 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish ethno jazz - drummer , percussionist , bandleader and composer , of the formations Oriental Wind and Okay Temiz Magnetic band founded.

Live and act

Okay Temiz took lessons from his mother as a child and later studied percussion in Ankara . In 1955, at the beginning of his professional career, he played in show groups; he developed his own percussion instruments during his training at the Tophane Art Institute . In 1967 he came to Stockholm with the Ulvi Temel Orchestra . There he met Don Cherry , who was increasingly concerned with global music ideas and became aware of the Turkish drummer. Back then Cherry was working with the South African double bass player Johnny Dyani on the crossing of South African folk music and its rhythms in jazz. In 1969 Cherry Okay committed Temiz to a festival appearance and recorded the album Live Ankara with him, as well as the album Orient in Paris in 1972 . The two musicians worked together for many years; in 1993 he was involved in the Don Cherry album Dona Nostra .

Since then Temiz has worked in parallel in Turkey and - from his adopted home Sweden - in Western Europe and has worked with musicians such as Chris McGregor , Harry Miller , Palle Danielsson , Christian Burchard and Charlie Mariano . In the early 1970s he played in Maffy Falay's Turkish-Swedish formation Sevda , had a trio with Mongezi Feza and Johnny Dyani and took part in the sessions of the New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden ( Südwestfunk ) in 1972 and 1974, respectively.

In 1975 he formed the Oriental Wind formation with Lennart Åberg . The starting point was always jazz; Temiz, however, incorporated unusual meters of Turkish, Arabic or Balkan origin into his ethno-jazz . His current formation Okay Temiz Magnetic Band (since 1995) continues this direction and develops it further. In 1984 he performed with the Percussion Summit at the Donaueschinger Musiktage . In 1985 he took part in the international percussion festival Tal Vadhya Utsav in India , organized by the Indian state, together with Atilla Engin and Burhan Öçal .

Temiz returned to Istanbul in 1998, where he founded his Rhythm Workshop , with which he propagated music not only as a musical project, but also as a healing force for the participants.

Prizes and awards

In 2011 Temiz received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Istanbul International Jazz Festival .
