Atilla Engin (* 1946 in Kayseri ; † November 2, 2019 in Paranaguá , Brazil ) was a Turkish drummer , percussionist , fusion interpreter , band leader and composer . From 1986 to 1989 he was a lecturer at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Denmark . From 1989 to 2005 he lived in New York , where he founded various orchestras. Since 2005 he lived in Brazil, where he founded the Brazil World Orchestra .

Engin began his musical career in Istanbul . In 1975 he moved to Copenhagen , one of the jazz centers in Europe . He founded his first jazz rock band Matao in 1976. In 1980 he founded the Atilla Engin Group . Engin is one of the co-founders of the state-run Copenhagen Royal Jazz Conservatory of Denmark, founded in 1986 . He lectured in this conservatory for four years. In 1985 he took part in the Tal Vadhya Utsav international percussion festival in India , organized by the Indian state, together with Okay Temiz and Burhan Öçal . In the same year he composed the prelude for the Roskilde Festival . From 1986 he organized the international drum and percussion festival World to World for four years. In 1987 Engins' student big band "TYRKIS" won first prize at the Dortmund Big Band Festival. He wanted to make Anatolian folk music known throughout the world through jazz. In 1989 he went to America . He founded his first orchestra, the New World Orchestra , in 1992, and his second, Turquoise, in 1996. Its third and final orchestra was founded in 1999 under the name The Istanbul Orchestra . He has lived in Brazil since 2005 .

Atilla Engin has worked with musicians from the Jazz Fusion and Rock Area in his musical life, such as B. Zakir Hussain , Airto Moreira , Ed Thigpen , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP), Naná Vasconcelos , Butch Lacy , Eddie Henderson , Elliott Sharp , Okay Temiz, Al Di Meola , Frank Colon, Peter Giger , Gilad (Gilad Dobrecky) , Aaron Comess, Rave Tesar, Dan Jordan, Hugo Rasmussen, Simon 'Cato' Spang Hansen, Ole Matthiessen, Eddie Henderson, Jens Winther and Uffe Markussen. The Copenhagen drummer Stefan Pasborg is one of his students . As one of the bustling jazz fusion interpreters in Turkey , Denmark and the USA , Atilla Engin played a role in cultural exchange.

In 1971 he composed and sang a poem by Omar Chayyām entitled Felek Usta . Atilla Özdemiroglu and Sanar Yurdatapan played in the orchestra. In 1974 Özdemir Erdogan sang his song Kumsalda on record. The song became a hit and stayed in the hit charts for weeks. The lyrics, the music and the arrangement came from Atilla Engin. He played the piano and drums himself in the recording studio for this song. His second song Bütün Içkiler Benden Bu Gece was sung on record by the singer Alpay and he played the drums when Selda Bağcan's song Anayasso was recorded.

In 1976 Atilla Engin founded his first jazz rock band Matao . In 1979 Matao released her first record Turkish Delight . The band has given concerts at the famous Roskilde Festival and in various places in Denmark. In 1980 he produced an album called Ataturk 'ün Çocuklari ve Nasreddin Hoca with children of Turkish origin who live in Denmark and gave a concert with Maffy Falay , Elvan Araci and Selçuk Sun at the "Fashing Jazz Klub Stockholm " . 1980 The "Atilla Engin Group" was founded. In 1982 the Atilla Engin Group released their first jazz / fusion record, Nazar . (Danish Music Productions). 1984 the second record Memories was released. Okay Temiz , the guitarist and percussionist Mehmet Ozan and the Danish bassist Hugo Rasmussen played in the orchestra.

In 1985 Atilla Engin became a co-founder of Denmark's state-run Copenhagen Royal Jazz Conservatory, and he lectured there until 1989. Atilla Engin Group was sent to Turkey by the Danish state to give concerts there as part of the European Year of Music. Atilla Engin participated with Okay Temiz and Burhan Öçal in the international percussion festival "Tal Vadhya Utsav" in India on behalf of Turkey. He was named '' Composer of the Year '' in 1985. Atilla Engin composed the prelude to the 1985 Roskilde Festival and conducted the orchestra.

In 1986 he organized the international drum and percussion festival World to World for four years. During these four years, u. a. In 1987 the Danish State Radio commissioned Atilla Engin to compose two songs and play them with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Atilla Engin Group and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra gave a concert together. The arrangement of the songs belonged to Atilla Engin. Atilla Engin founded the Tyrkis Big Band Orchestra with his students from the Conservatory and gave concerts with it, including at the Jazzhus Montmartre . Engins student big band Tyrkis won first prize at the Dortmund Big Band Festival. Tyrkis has released the record My Little Chinese Love . Engin lectured at the Branbjerg Staevne , a summer school for jazz. The Atilla Engin Group has released their fourth album ' No Money No Honey . Arto Tunçboyacıyan played on this album. The Atilla Engin Group has their fifth album Melo Perquana , with the Danish jazz - bassist Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen published (NHØP). After the album, the Atilla Engin Group organized a tour with NHØP and Nuri Bora. In 1989 Atilla Engin gave a series of concerts in various cities in Turkey with the big band orchestra, which he put together from 16 students from the state "Copenhagen Royal Jazz" Conservatory. The sponsors of these concerts were the Danish Ministry of Education, the Danish Ministry of Culture , the Turkish radio TRT and the mayors of the cities of Ankara , Izmir and Istanbul .

In 1989 Atilla Engin went to New York at the end of the year . In 1992 Engin founded his first orchestra in America, the New World Orchestra . In 1993 the New World Orchestra gave its first concert at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall . After this concert, the orchestra gave several concerts in various clubs in New York. In 1996 Atilla Engin founded his second orchestra, Turquoise .

Turquoise has given several jazz fusion concerts, including at the New York Mayfest. In 1999 Turquoise released their first CD, Mosaic Of Anatolia . Most of the songs on this CD were recorded live at the Nightingales Jazz Club in New York. Turquoise gave the concert in the Florence Gould Hall in New York for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey . The guitarist Al Di Meola and the Indian percussionist Badal Roy took part in this concert with their orchestras. The Istanbul Orchestra was founded in 2000 . The The Istanbul Orchestra has given in various New York clubs several concerts. Atilla Engin and The Istanbul Orchestra realized the Anatolia Word Music Concert with the Turkish Saz players Arif Sağ and Erdal Erzincan in the New York Symphony Space . Among the audience were well-known music producers such as B. Ahmet Ertegün and Arif Mardin Atilla Engin played at the Zülfü Livaneli and Maria Farantouri concert in the Town Hall in New York with İlhan Erşahin and Al Di Meola as guests.
