The Kulturministeriet the Danish Ministry of Culture. It is one of the current 22 line ministries of the Danish government and is located in the Assistenshuset on Nybrogade in the center of Copenhagen. His area of responsibility includes art, theater and film funding, radio and television, copyright law, and popular and competitive sports.

Acting Minister of Culture has been Joy Mogensen from the Social Democrats since June 27, 2019 .

history

The Ministry was established on September 19, 1961 as the "Ministry of Cultural Affairs" ( Ministeriet for cultural anliggender ). Most of his departments were outsourced from the Ministry of Education at the time, but some tasks also came from other ministries, for example the areas of theater and film from the Ministry of Justice, monument protection from the State Chancellery, the Danish Armory Museum from the Ministry of Defense as well as the Danish Arts and Crafts Museum and Danmarks Tekniske Museum from the Ministry of Commerce.

The ministry's funding policy, in particular the purchases of works of art by Statens Kunstfond from 1964, met with valiant criticism from the start. In view of the increasing consumption of culture and an increasingly expanded concept of culture, however, the changing governments steadily expanded state subsidies.

In the short period from 1987 to 1988 the Ministry was called Kultur- og Kommunikationministeriet and since 1988 it has been called Kulturministeriet . A number of competence shifts followed: in 1974 the ministry was given responsibility for film censorship, and in 1976 for sports. When the government changed in 1993, a large number of departments were redistributed, which led to a further expansion of the scope of duties.

In 2006 , Minister of Culture Brian Mikkelsen published a list of 108 works under the name Kulturkanon , which should record the Danish cultural heritage. The controversial project drew further "canons" with it.

Authorities and government institutions

The three former authorities Kunststyrelsen (art authority), Kulturarvsstyrelsen ( cultural heritage authority) and Styrelsen for Bibliotek og Medier (library and media authority) were merged in January 2012 in the joint authority Kulturstyrelsen . Another authority that was subordinate to the Ministry of Culture was the Styrelsen for Slotte og Kulturejendomme (Authority for Castles and Cultural Property ), which was responsible, among other things, for the operation and maintenance of castles, gardens and other cultural assets. In January 2016 they merged with Kulturstyrelsen to form Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen (castles and culture authority). Around 30 state institutions are currently affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, including:
