Dansk Sprognævn

Dansk Sprognævn (DSN for short, German : "Danish Language Commission") is a state institution of the Danish Ministry of Culture that defines the rules for Danish spelling . The seat of the Commission is in Bogense .

In 1955 she emerged as the successor to the “Spelling Committee of the Ministry of Education” (Undervisningsministeriets Retskrivningsudvalg) .

Dansk Sprognævn follows the changes in the Danish language in order to create rules for the Danish spelling. Grundstamm forms a database of new Danish words that contains around 300,000 words and grows by around 5,000 to 7,000 words annually. The commission is the publisher of the Retskrivningsordbogen , a dictionary for the Danish language , the quarterly Nyt fra Sprognævn (“News from the Language Commission”) as well as manuals and instructions. An information service answers questions from authorities and private individuals about the Danish language and its usage free of charge.

Database

Commission staff follow the language change by reading newspapers, books and other writings, listening to the radio, watching television and searching in text databases, especially those with press articles. You note down new words and associated quotations, which are then both fed into the electronic database and stored on index cards. The database contains around a million application examples for the 300,000 words. It provides information on which words are actually used in Danish, without taking a position when collecting, whether the individual words are good or bad or wrong or correct. New words do not have to be approved in order to be included in the database. Internally, it is used by employees for research purposes. Externally, it provides dictionary editors, students and researchers, for example, with information about the latest Danish vocabulary.

After 1986 and 1996, the third edition of the official Danish “Dictionary for Spelling” (Retskrivningsordbog en ) appeared in 2001, replacing the Retskrivningsordbog from 1955. In addition to 64,000 words and their inflected forms, the book also contains the official spelling rules.

Section 2 of the “Law on Danish Spelling” (Lov om dansk retskrivning) specifies who is obliged to follow the official spelling from the dictionary. This includes the public administration, the Folketing and associated authorities as well as all courts. The same applies to non-public educational institutions, which are subsidized by more than half, as well as private and independent schools, in which the pupils are obliged to teach.

Dansk Sprognævn consists of a 40-member board of directors whose members are appointed for four years. The council is made up of representatives who come from various institutions and associations and who have a particular interest in linguistic issues. Areas that are represented by representatives in Dansk Sprognævn are, for example: the state, justice and education ministries, universities, radio and television and the teachers, journalists, authors and actors' association. In addition, up to three private individuals with specialist knowledge can be appointed as members of the Board of Directors.

A seven-person working committee is responsible for the Commission's economic and development strategy. Five of the members of this committee are appointed by the Board of Directors, one by the Ministry of Culture and one by the staff of the affiliated research institute. The committee sets up a number of expert groups to advise the editors of the dictionary, the font Nyt fra Sprognævnet and other publications. The experts also deal with technical languages and language policy .

As part of a larger restructuring, Sabine Kirchmeier-Andersen was appointed a director in 2006.

One example of such a cooperation has been the Sproget.dk web portal since 2006 , which is the result of a cooperation between the institutions of the Ministry of Culture, the Danish Language and Literature Society and Dansk Sprognævn. Comprehensive information on the Danish language is made available to the public online free of charge on the portal, including reference works such as the official dictionary and writings of Dansk Sprognævn.

International cooperation

At the international level, the Danish Commission works closely with language commissions from the other Nordic countries , among other things to prevent the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages from becoming unnecessarily distant. Most of the cooperation has been running since 2009 through the "Nordic Language Coordination", an organ of the Nordic Council of Ministers .

Dansk Sprognævn is a member of the " European Federation of National Institutions for Language " (EFNIL).
