Gammel Dok Pakhus (also known as Gammel Dok for short ) is a former warehouse on Strandgade in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen , whose style is characteristic of the dignified warehouse architecture of the early 20th century. On the side facing the water, it will house the Danish Architecture Center ( Dansk Arkitektur Centrum , DAC) until 2018 , where knowledge and visions of future architecture are developed and conveyed. The DAC includes exhibition, seminar and conference rooms, a specialist bookshop and a café. The state art workshops (Statens Verkstæder for Kunst) are located on the Strandgade side and provide workspaces for artists, designers, artisans and conservators .

history

The name Gammel Dok Pakhus (Old Dock Storage) is derived from Denmark's first dry dock , Gammel Dok . The dock, laid out in 1739, was located between the present-day storage facilities of Eigtveds Pakhus and Gammel Dok Pakhus and was demolished in 1918.

The original warehouse was built in 1882 according to designs by HC Scharling for the public limited company A / S De Forenede Oplagspladser og Værfter i Kjøbenhavn and was a two-story building with a slate roof . In 1920 the building was increased by an additional, third floor and a colossal geziegeltes hipped roof mounted, the roof storage provides room for three additional floors. In the early years, Gammel Dok Pakhus was used as a granary , in the basement of which Icelandic goods such as Atlantic herring were stored. It later served as a furniture store with a furniture shop on the ground floor.

1984–86 the warehouse was completely renovated on behalf of the Danish Ministry of Construction and according to plans by the architects Erik Møllers , so that in 1986 the architecture and building export center (Gammel Dok Arkitektur og Byggeeksportcenter) , today DAC, and the state art workshops could move in. In 1998 a modern square was opened in front of the house, on which water basins to the time of the Danish King Christian VI. should remember. At that time, ships of the Danish fleet were still lying in the dry dock, of which remains were found during excavations during the course of the redesign of the square.
