Joy Mogensen (2018)

Joy Mogensen (born August 11, 1980 in Toronto ) is a Danish politician from the Social Democrats . From 2011 to 2019 she was the mayor of Roskilde . She has been Denmark's Minister of Churches and Culture since June 2019 .

Life

Mogensen was born in Toronto, where her father worked for a Danish company. After her parents divorced, she grew up with her mother in Benløse near Ringsted . She has a bachelor's degree from Roskilde University .

Mayoress of Roskilde

In 2005 she moved to the Roskilde City Council for the first time. She was immediately elected leader of the Social Democrats and Vice Mayor of the city. In 2011, after the resignation of her party colleague Poul Lindor Nielsen , she took over the post of first mayor during the current legislative period.

Appointment as minister

On June 27, 2019, Mogensen was appointed Minister of Churches and Culture in the Frederiksen government and she resigned from the post of mayor. At the time of her appointment, she was pregnant through artificial insemination, and in previous interviews she stated that she would be a single mother. For this reason, the move has been criticized by some observers, who say it is questionable whether Mogensen will be able to meet her obligations. Others, however, welcomed the filling of the post and found that Mogensen can thus serve as a role model for other single parents. Mogensen's daughter was born dead. Development Minister Rasmus Prehn and Transport Minister Benny Engelbrecht took over their duties during the mourning phase .

Criticism of action in the COVID-19 pandemic

Mogensen received criticism for her actions during the COVID-19 pandemic . For a long time she pointed out that cultural companies should receive financial aid in the same way as other companies. Zenia Stampe , the cultural-political spokeswoman for the left-wing liberal radical Venstre party , declared that she had no confidence that Mogensen could secure a functioning cultural life. The Radical Venstre, a party that supports Frederiksen's minority government, has therefore announced that it will work with Venstre , Dansk Folkeparti , the Enhedslisten , Det Konservative Folkeparti , Socialistisk Folkeparti and the non-attached politician Uffe Elbæk to withdraw Mogensen from the negotiations for the aid package. Instead, either the Ministry of Finance or the Ministry of Acquisitions should be responsible.
