Manu Sareen (born May 16, 1967 in Punjab , India ) is a Danish writer and politician from Det Radikalische Venstre (RV) and was Minister of Churches in the Thorning-Schmidt I cabinet and Minister of Social Affairs in the Thorning-Schmidt II cabinet .

Life

The son of Indian immigrants has worked as a social worker since 1997 . He also started in the local politics to get involved and in 2002 a member of the city council of Copenhagen and a member of the Children and Youth Committee of the City Council. At times, Sareen, who had also acted as a conflict mediator since 2003, was also chairman of the faction of Det Radikalische Venstre in the city council of Copenhagen and from January 2008 to September 2010 state auditor. Sareen was elected Politician of the Year in 2003, 2006 and 2007 by LGBT Danmark, the national association of gays and lesbians.

After he had been from January to April 2011 Substitute Member of Parliament, he won in the general election in 2011 in the electoral area Copenhagen Stork Reds a seat in the Folketing . In the 2015 Folketing election he was defeated by Ida Auken within the party , lost his seat in parliament and announced his retirement from politics.

On October 3, 2011, Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt appointed Sareen Minister for Equality and Church and Minister for Nordic Cooperation in the newly formed government of Denmark. He was the first male equality minister in the country and, after Henry Grünbaum and Isi Foighel, the third minister who came from an immigrant family.
