John Goodridge

John Octavius ​​Goodridge (* 1808 in Sturminster Newton , Dorset , † November 26, 1865 in Childe Okeford , Dorset) was a British ship's doctor who performed his service on the HMS Starling and the HMS Herald, among others .

John Octavius ​​Goodridge was the son of doctor John Goodridge. Like his father, he became a doctor and entered the service of the Royal Navy . When the first opium war broke out in July 1840 , he served under the command of Henry Kellett as assistant surgeon on the survey ship HMS Starling . The HMS Starling was ordered to the war zone. After the end of the war he was first transferred to Devonport on the HMS Royal William . Goodridge reached seniority on September 20, 1843. Goodridge was awarded the China War Medal , which reads “JOGoodridge, Asst. Surgn. HMS Starling ”carries.

On February 10, 1845 Goodridge began his service as a ship's doctor on the survey ship HMS Herald , which was under the command of Henry Kellett, and whose crew also included the naturalist Thomas Edmondston (1825-1846). The HMS Herald was to conduct surveys in the Pacific Ocean along the coast from Chile to Alaska . During a stay on Cedar Island , Goodridge discovered a new Mammillaria species that was later named after him as Mammillaria goodrichii . In 1848, the HMS Starling began to look for the missing polar explorer John Franklin . During this voyage, Goodridge sailed on the HMS Herald through the Bering Strait, crossing the Chukchi Sea . The Herald Island was discovered. In 1851 he returned to England with the HMS Herald . Goodridge was awarded the Arctic Medal for participating in the Arctic expedition .

On April 28, 1852 Goodridge married in Childe Okeford , Dorset Jane Castleman Baldwin († 1893). Their marriage resulted in three sons and a daughter. His demotion took place on February 17, 1853, on October 31, 1853 he was classified as unfit for service. Goodridge died of complications from blood poisoning .
