Hørsholm ( German Hirschholm ) is a place on the Danish island of Zealand in the Hovedstaden region . Due to the steady growth since it was founded, Hørsholm has grown beyond the municipal boundaries of Hørsholm Municipality established in the municipal reform of 1970 and thus also extends into the neighboring municipality of Fredensborg to the north and the municipality of Rudersdal to the south .

A total of 47,499 inhabitants lived in the city on January 1, 2020, of which 24,341 in Hørsholm Municipality, 10,171 in Fredensborg Municipality and 12,987 in Rudersdal Municipality.

The area belongs to the catchment area of Copenhagen and, like other northern suburbs, is characterized by prosperity. The Helsingør motorway ( E 47 ) and the København – Helsingør railway line cross the town. Kokkedal train station is in the local area; however, central Hørsholm uses Rungsted Kyst station two kilometers to the east.

history

King Christian VI 1730 had the large baroque Hirschholm Palace built for himself and his wife Sophie Magdalene . In 1739 the city, which hardly existed in practice, received city rights. The palace, which was in the style of Versailles , fell into disrepair from 1771 and was demolished in 1810-12. Only stables, barns and other utility buildings have been preserved.

In the same place, on an island in the castle park, the Hørsholm Church was built in 1823 according to a design by Christian Frederik Hansen . The classical church is very similar to the Marienkirche in Husum, built by the same architect .

The town charter was revoked in 1867.
