Oulainen [ ˈɔu̯lɑi̯nɛn ] (Swedish historically Oulais ) is a city in northwestern Finland . It is located around 100 km south of the city of Oulu on the banks of the Pyhäjoki River in the Österbotten countryside .

The community has existed since 1865 and was granted city rights in 1977. In addition to the main town Oulainen, the villages Kilpua, Lehtopää, Matkaniva, Petäjäskoski, Piipsjärvi and Honkaranta belong to the municipality. The eponymous lake in the village of Piipsjärvi was drained around 1800 in order to gain agricultural land, but its basin was flooded again in 1978. It is the only lake in Finland that has been “restored” in this way and is a popular fishing spot.

Oulainen is due to its location on the Oulu – Helsinki railway line, state road 86 and as the location of the Oulaisten Liikenne bus company, an important traffic junction in Österbotten. Various medium-sized service and industrial companies have settled here.

City council

The dominant political force in Oulainen is the Center Party . In the 2012 local elections she received more than 50% of the vote. She has 16 out of 27 members of the city council. The conservative National Collection Party won four seats . The Social Democrats and the right-wing populist True Finns won three seats. One mandate went to the left alliance .
