Ylivieska [ ˈyliviɛskɑ ] is a small town in northwestern Finland . It is located around 130 km south of the city of Oulu in the northern Ostrobothnian countryside .
history
Ylivieska has been an independent municipality since 1867. The town owed its growth after 1886 to the construction of the railway line from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, which at this point crosses another important transport route in the region, the Kalajoki River . In 1971 Ylivieska was granted city rights.
Today Ylivieska is the economic and cultural center of the Kalajokitales ( Kalajokilakso ) and the seat of an administrative community ( seutukunta ) to which the municipalities of Alavieska , Merijärvi , Sievi , Oulainen and Kalajoki have joined Ylivieska .
In the past, agriculture, especially livestock and dairy farming, was the main line of business. In recent decades, more and more medium-sized industrial and service companies have settled here. In recent times, the place has developed into the center of the region's automobile trade; Every year around 6,000 cars change hands here.
