Tyrnävä [ ˈtyrnævæ ] is a municipality in Finland. It is located around 30 km south of the city of Oulu in the northern Ostrobothnian countryside .

The political municipality has existed since 1865 and, in addition to the parish village of Tyrnävä, includes the villages of Kolmikanta, Markkuu, Murto, Suutarinkylä, Temmes, Ylipää and Ängeslevä. The municipality of Temmes was incorporated in 2001.

history

Tyrnävä was first mentioned in 1581. A major turning point in the history of the place was the Great Northern War (1714-21), in the course of which, according to the church register, 706 residents of the place were killed; another 136 were deported to Russia. From 1906 Tyrnävä was also the seat and brand name of one of the largest dairy companies in Finland, which however ceased operations around 1950. As a result, the farmers in the community switched from livestock farming to potato cultivation. Today, in addition to the municipal administration, the spirits manufacturer Shaman Spirits is one of the main employers, who processes the majority of the local potato production into vodka. With the Bothnia Bay Dry Gin brand , the company has what is probably the only potato-based gin in its range in the world.
