Taivalkoski [ ˈtɑi̯vɑlkɔski ] is a municipality in Finland. It is located around 800 km northeast of the capital Helsinki in the hilly landscape known as Koillismaa in the northeast of the country.
The municipality covers an area the size of the Saarland , but has only 4024 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). In addition to the church village Taivalkoski, it includes the widely scattered settlements Inkee, Jokijärvi, Jokikylä, Jurmu, Koitila, Kosto, Kurtti, Loukusa, Metsäkylä, Pisto, Tyrävaara and Vaarakylä.
history
The region, previously settled by the Sami , was opened up by Finnish settlers from the 16th century . Until the 18th century the village of Jokikylä was the focus of the settlement and the parish, after the construction of a sawmill in today's church village Taivalkoski, this became the administrative center. For centuries, agriculture and forestry as well as reindeer herding were the most important branches of business, industrialization did not take place until the second half of the 20th century. Today the community, like the entire region, has to struggle with structural weakness and considerable rural exodus. In recent years tourism has developed into an important industry.
